"The Ford Focus is very special to Ford in Europe. When it was revealed in 1998 it represented a huge step forward for us in terms of style and desirability over its predecessor. It truly changed the perception of Ford for many customers and journalists alike. That's why we felt it was vital to apply our new Ford design language, 'kinetic design', to the Focus as soon as we could. At the same time, we have taken the opportunity to make Focus even more practical and contemporary and added further quality improvements. Our design and development teams have done a really great job and I'm proud to present the new Ford Focus."
John Fleming, President and CEO, Ford of Europe
The New Ford Focus - Introduction
"It is not easy to improve something that is already good and well-proven. If you don't take great care you run the risk of unnecessarily changing something that was really good before - and not for the better. With the Ford Focus, acknowledged as a great car, we were determined not to implement change for change's sake. We nevertheless managed to make the new Focus even better in specific areas. But it also made us proud that many of its attributes did not have to be touched at all. So you can still look forward to enjoying the driving dynamics of the Focus."
Gunnar Herrmann, C-Car Vehicle Line Director, Ford of Europe
The Ford Focus, with around 5 million vehicles produced in Europe, is the first and - to date - the only car in the world to be acclaimed "Car of the Year" both in Europe and in North America. In total the Ford Focus has won over 80 awards in Europe alone. It has significantly influenced the automotive world and at the same time triggered a successful new direction of Ford in Europe.
With this newest version of the Ford Focus due to begin rolling off the production lines from the end of 2007 as a three-door and five-door hatchback and as a wagon, this success story is set to continue. The Focus portfolio will then be extended further in early 2008, when the four-door saloon, the Focus Coupé-Cabriolet and the sporty flagship model Focus ST, will be added.
The New Ford Focus - Design
"Energy in Motion - what Ford vehicle would better suit the Ford 'kinetic design' philosophy than the Focus? After all, the Focus was a major factor in establishing Ford's excellent reputation for driving dynamics. The balance we have created between dynamics and harmony makes the new Focus the best looking Focus ever."
Martin Smith, Executive Director Design, Ford of Europe
Exterior Design
Stefan Lamm, who led the exterior design team, was offered an open brief in the design of the new Ford Focus. "The hugely positive response to the re-design of the new Ford C-MAX gave us the confidence to push the design of the new Focus even further. The result is unmistakably kinetic, unmistakably Ford Focus and a recognisable member of the new Ford family."
Stefan Lamm, Chief Designer Exteriors, Ford of Europe
The new Ford Focus presents a bold new face to the world: Trapezoidal grilles, swept back headlamps and athletic full surfaces are all signatures of the new Ford brand character. The inverted lower trapezoid grille, in the upmarket Ghia and Titanium variants is enhanced by the elegant chrome surround. This lower grille is balanced by a smaller upper grille capped with a chrome strip visually linking it to the latest Ford kinetic entries such as Mondeo and more recently C-MAX. Great emphasis has been placed by the Design team on the headlamp appearance. The dramatic swept back housings are filled with the latest technology featuring HID
Bi-Xenon or the Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS). These technologies are highlighted by different finishes for different series levels, for example black and chrome for Titanium vehicles and full chrome for other variants.
The Side View - Dynamic and Muscular
The side profile of the new Focus features the new 'kinetic design' cues of bold wheel lips and the strong undercut running from front to rear of the car.
This dynamic link from front to rear gives the vehicle its new sleek appearance. The body side is clean and uncluttered. "Finishing trims such as bodyside mouldings would have negatively impacted on the neat design of the side view, something that we were keen to avoid," said Lamm. "The expressive modelling of the side view of the car clearly brings the new Focus into the kinetic family."
The Tail - a Neat Conclusion
The 'kinetic design' elements visible on the rear of the vehicle include the newly shaped rear glass and contoured tailgate as well as new tail lamps and rear bumper. Together, these elements give new Focus a wider look and a more purposeful stance. A new body coloured upper rear spoiler (for Ghia and Titanium series) completes the look. The new design of tail lamps incorporates, as an option, the latest LED technology. "We have not made any compromises in the design of the new Focus and the Exteriors design team is very proud of the final outcome," Stefan Lamm summarised.
Interior Design
Comprehensive interior improvements were made to create an even more pleasant and user friendly space for those who travel in a new Focus, and to reflect the new dynamic exterior design on the interior as well. For the driver in particular, this has resulted in newly designed instruments providing better legibility which, along with all other interior controls, are now illuminated in red. The controls of the new audio equipment and two-zone air conditioning system were also ergonomically improved.
Furthermore, the high series now includes a newly designed centre console (optional for the Trend and part of the Sport Pack), which takes on the flowing look of 'kinetic design'. In addition to a movable armrest and a four litre capacity storage compartment, the back of the console provides additional storage surfaces for back-seat passengers or optional items such as a 230 volt inverter or the USB audio connection box. Another feature of the console will become available as an option from the beginning of 2008: the Ford Power Button, which will be positioned near the gear shifter.
It is not just the functionality of the interior that has been improved - special attention was also devoted to its quality. Particular importance was attached to selecting and combining surface materials and colours. Now the entire instrument panel, as well as the upper trims of the front doors, is made of a new grained, soft-touch synthetic material. New colours were added to complement the look.
A variety of attractive foil finishes highlight the central functional areas of the centre console and the instrument panel.
The fabrics of seating and interior panelling were also newly designed and from the Trend series upwards, an innovative woven roof fabric is fitted.
The New Ford PowerShift Transmission
The Ford PowerShift transmission will be available from the beginning of 2008 in the Ford Focus. This completely new six-speed double-clutch transmission combines the efficiency and driving dynamics of a manual transmission with the ease of operation of an automatic transmission. Its combination with a 136 PS
(100 kW) 2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi common rail turbo diesel engine clearly demonstrates that relaxed driving does not have to come at the expense of high CO 2 emission levels.
The Ford PowerShift transmission, which was developed by GETRAG FORD Transmissions GmbH, 50:50 Ford/GETRAG joint venture, consists essentially of two layshaft transmissions working in parallel, each with its own wet clutch unit. Thanks to the layout of the intermediate shafts - one carrying the "uneven" gears 1, 3 and 5, whilst the other the even gears 2, 4 and 6 - the next gear change can be prepared by pre-selecting the next gear whilst in motion and at full power. The change then takes place through the opposed activation of both clutches, the clutch activations being co-ordinated such that no torque interruption occurs.
In contrast to the conventional automatic transmission, the basic technical configuration of the Ford PowerShift transmission offers numerous advantages. It does not require any complex sub-systems such as torque converters, planetary gear sets, multiple wet clutches and multiple bands - all of which significantly reduce gearbox efficiency due to increased inertia and drag torque effects. The result is impressive: the Ford PowerShift transmission now provides the ease and permanent motion of a conventional automatic transmission as well as the performance of a manual transmission. It also delivers fast and sporty shifts while maintaining highest degrees of shift smoothness. A further advantage of the Ford PowerShift transmission is its high torque capacity and free choice of ratios, making it an ideal partner of modern high performance diesel engines.
The New Ford Focus 2.0-Litre Duratorq TDCi with Ford PowerShift Transmission
The Ford PowerShift transmission will be available from early 2008 in the new Ford Focus as well as the Ford C-MAX, in combination with the 136 PS (100 kW)
2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi engine. This powertrain combination takes full advantage of the new PowerShift transmission. As a result, in this configuration, the average fuel consumption will be approximately 10 per cent better, and CO 2 emissions will be lower, compared to a conventional six-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Final homologated fuel economy and CO 2 emissions data, as well as performance data for the Ford Focus with this new transmission technology, will be published closer to the car's market launch.
The New Ford Focus ECOnetic
The new Ford Focus ECOnetic demonstrates that very favourable fuel consumption levels and significantly reduced CO 2 emissions can be achieved using conventional drive technology coupled with a clever combination of individual fuel-saving measures. Powered by a 109 PS (80 kW) 1.6-litre Duratorq TDCi with standard Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), average consumption for this vehicle has been homologated at 4.3l/100 km. This corresponds to an average CO 2 emission of only 115 g/km, which is a class leading result for a conventional vehicle in this segment. A second variant with an even lower CO 2 performance is currently under development.
Using the already very economical regular 109 PS version with Diesel Particulate Filter as a base, the starting point in achieving such values was to reduce drive resistances. To improve aerodynamics, the vehicle was lowered by 10 mm at the front and 8 mm at the back. In addition, an aerodynamics kit is standard, consisting of a modified front bumper skirt and rocker claddings and a rear spoiler. To also improve the aerodynamics, the outer areas of the lower grille were given blanking plates on the inside. In combination with 195/65R15 tyres a very good cd of 0.31 is achieved.
A further measure to reduce driving resistance and which was tested for the first time in the development of the Focus ECOnetic was the introduction of a new
low-viscosity transmission oil developed by Ford's partner BP. The benefits were so clear that it is being introduced across other Ford products in the C and CD segments.
Besides a re-calibration of the engine-module, the reduction in energy consumption in conjunction with the electro-hydraulic EHPAS steering underlines the fact that sometimes even minor causes also produce a major benefit. By re-calibrating the
no-load performance of the electric servo pump, the respective current consumption was reduced sufficiently to result in a reduction in fuel consumption.
New Ford Focus 1.6-litre TDCi variants to achieve 120 g/km CO 2
Another direct result of the Ford ECOnetic initiative is that all 1.6-litre TDCI variants will achieve 120 g/km CO 2. By re-calibrating the engine and electro-hydraulic EHPAS steering modules, as well as using a low-friction transmission oil, all versions of the new Ford Focus fitted with the acclaimed 1.6-litre TDCi engine, will have an average CO 2 emission of 120 g/km or even less - and this is regardless of power rating, bodystyles and wheel dimensions.
Dr. Thilo Seibert, Supervisor Performance and Economy, Ford of Europe, explains: "Developed from an already very economical basic vehicle, the Focus ECOnetic combines new ideas and approaches. The result is a highly usable and extremely economical and clean car with favourably priced conventional drive technology. We are especially proud of the fact that we were able to achieve our target values without having to increase the length of the gear ratios - thereby ensuring that the Focus ECOnetic drives just as well as you would expect a Focus to do. What's even more - with the consequent adopting of Ford ECOnetic ideas to the core model range of the new Ford Focus, we made another important step in affordable and sustainable mobility."
Other Alternative Fuel Applications in the Ford Focus Range
The Flexifuel version of the 1.8-litre Duratec petrol four-cylinder engine can be fuelled with bio-ethanol E85-fuel as an alternative to conventional unleaded petrol - or in any mix of both. Bio-ethanol is a regenerative energy source produced from renewable biomass. Greenhouse CO 2 emission is reduced by 30-80 per cent over the entire life cycle as a result, without performance and driving pleasure being compromised.
Ford has been offering Focus Flexifuel models since 2001 in Sweden and they are today available in several other European markets. Around 80 per cent of all Ford Focus vehicles sold in Sweden now are Flexifuel.
Other alternative fuel versions for the Ford Focus range include CNG (compressed natural gas) and LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), both based on the 2.0-litre Duratec petrol engine. The availability of these versions is connected to market preferences for these alternative fuels.
New Equipment and Options
Easyfuel Capless Refuelling System
Like the Mondeo, the new Focus now also enjoys the benefit of the acclaimed Ford capless refuelling system. Apart from being simple and clean to use when re-fuelling, this system is designed to prevent mis-fuelling and the associated damage, inconvenience and expense.
Ford Power Button (from early 2008)
The optional Ford Power button enables the vehicle to start up simply and in style, without having to insert and turn a key in a steering column switch. As long as the driver has the key with them in the car, the Focus communicates wirelessly with a micro-chip in the key to activate the ignition system. All the driver has to do is lightly touch the Ford power button twice and the engine fires up. A further touch of the button in turn switches the engine and ignition off, with a safeguard to prevent it being operated while the car is in motion.
Tyre pressure warning system
Taking account of the respective driving situations, a sensor system checks the wheel turning speeds and, by means of a warning light in the instrument panel, reports any anomalies to indicate a change in wheel diameter due to a drop in tyre pressure. Simple, effective and secure - it is optional for every new Ford Focus.
230 Volt power socket
All vehicles with the 'High-Series' centre console can be ordered with a 230 Volt power socket as an option. A power inverter is accommodated in the console and the socket is positioned on the back of the centre console where it can be used easily by those sitting in the rear seats. By means of this option it is possible, at any time, to connect regular electrical appliances of up to a capacity of 150 Watts without the need for a specific inverter for each individual electrical appliance.
LED rear lights
All three- and five-door models, as well as the wagon, are fitted with LED rear light technology when the Adaptive Front lighting System or Bi-Xenon headlights are specified.
The Planar Light Guide technology gives the rear lights a unique appearance. In the centre of the rear light unit is located a hidden element with six LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes). These LEDs transfer their light energy via vertical optical fibres onto the rear of the tail light lens. These optical fibres are, in turn, traversed by horizontal cross bars on whose 45 degree edges the light energy is broken up and radiated to the outside. The visual result is unique and an industry first.

Alles over Detroit Auto Show: Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe Bows, Barons Rejoice | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Jalopnik | 2007-01-10 01:49:21
A late-'70s Lincoln for the experimental jet set, Eurotrash and stars, the Phantom Drophead Coupé shed its tarp at the DetroitAuto Show. The chaps who brought the news from Crewe to Goodwood under the leadership of their Bavarian overlords call it such things as a "less formal interpretation of classic Rolls Royce design" and "sleek, streamlined." Yeah. Streamlined like a goddamn lavishly-appointed Freightliner, Herr von Richthofen. Press release happens post-jump. – Davey G. Johnson
PRESS RELEASE / TECH SPECS:
ROLLS-ROYCE LAUNCHES PHANTOM DROPHEAD COUPÉ AT DETROIT
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars will unveil its new Phantom Drophead Coupé at the DetroitMotor Show on Sunday 7 January. Production of the new car will start at Goodwood in the summer of 2007.
The two-door, four-seat convertible is a less formal interpretation of classic Rolls-Royce design. Using the lightweight rigidity of an all-aluminium spaceframe, it marries modern technology to a sleek, streamlined convertible body.
Its exterior lines echo the timeless styling of the great Rolls-Royce cars: a long bonnet, large-diameter wheels, short front and long rear overhangs and the quintessential dynamic line descending along its flanks. Inside, the design emphasises the airy openness of top-down motoring, embracing the elements and creating a stunning, social environment.
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Chief Designer, Ian Cameron, said, "This car gave us the chance to think about the very nature of convertible motoring and in particular what it means to Rolls-Royce. Above all we were determined to make this car a joy to live with and engineered it to give years of effortless service to its owner."
A number of features first seen on 100EX, the experimental convertible shown by Rolls-Royce in 2004, have been engineered into the new Phantom Drophead Coupé. Two of the most visually striking of these are the brushed steel bonnet and A-pillar and the teak decking for the rear hood cover. The brushed steel is machine finished to give a uniform grain before undergoing extensive hand polishing to achieve a perfect sheen. At the rear, the teak decking is treated with a carefully blended mix of oils to preserve a natural finish and a long lasting lustre that is as beautiful as it is hardy.
Front opening coach doors have been homologated for the new car and add considerably to the ease of access to the rear seat, as well as to the overall aesthetics. Unique to Rolls-Royce, the doors dramatically transform the Phantom Drophead Coupé's looks, giving a side profile reminiscent of classic sports cars of the '60s. Crucially, they also aid the overall stiffness of the body as the rear hinged doors allow for an uninterrupted A-pillar. Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupé
INTRODUCTION
In 2004, Rolls-Royce unveiled 100EX, a striking experimental drophead built to celebrate 100 years of arguably the most famous automotive brand in the world. Built without compromise, it encapsulated a century of elegance and engineering, and, in an instant, defined the future direction of the brand.
In its two world tours, 100EX garnered positive comments from customers and the media alike. Such was the strength of the reaction that, in the autumn of 2005, Rolls-Royce announced that a production version would be available by 2007. In the interim years, the team at Goodwood have worked tirelessly to turn the experimental car into a reality.
Launched at the DetroitMotor Show 2006, the Phantom Drophead Coupé is the second new model from Rolls-Royce since BMW Group became custodian of the marque in 1998.
The Phantom Drophead Coupé has been carefully crafted to be aesthetically pleasing, yet practical too. Wood, leather, chrome and brushed steel have been used where most appropriate. Form and function have equal billing. The simplicity of the design belies a car built to provide years of effortless service.
The Phantom Drophead Coupé offers owners an unparalleled convertible experience, combining compelling driveability with exceptional engineering, technology and design - hand-crafted from the finest materials to an exceptional level of quality.
DESIGN
From the outset, the design team at Goodwood were adamant that the Phantom Drophead Coupé should be more than simply a convertible version of the Phantom. "Designing without compromise meant that, to a certain extent, we had to start again," says Rolls-Royce Chief Designer Ian Cameron. "Simply removing the Phantom's roof could have made a great convertible but it wouldn't have made a perfect one. With the Phantom Drophead Coupé we had the chance to think about the very nature of convertible motoring and, in particular, what it means to Rolls-Royce."
Every exterior panel on the Phantom Drophead Coupé is new, echoing the Phantom's style but with carefully considered proportions more suited to the shorter body. From the raked front end to the sweeping rear, every aspect was studied at length to ensure that the finished car looked purposeful and elegant both with the hood up and with it stowed. For the interior, the concept was simple: bring the outside in. Create a social space enabling occupants to embrace the elements using sumptuous, relevant materials.
As well as considering the finer details of the package - seating arrangements and dashboard layouts, for example - the designers also developed some fundamental beliefs about how the materials they were using should work. The entire team was keen to keep things as natural as possible and, as a result, there is an instant, raw beauty to the Phantom Drophead Coupé. Materials are used in a way that emphasises their natural charm and there is an immediacy to the exposed elements of brushed steel and solid teak. Bleaches, stains and lacquers were shunned as far as possible in favour of more natural finishes. Hands touch only chrome, leather or wood. Other materials, such as the brushed steel, are used as architectural detailing, giving the whole car a sense of visual tactility.
"The Phantom Drophead Coupé is about emphasising the essentials of pleasure," says Cameron. "Above all, we were determined to make this car a joy to live with. Rolls-Royce is the opposite of stiff formality. Why would you design and build a car like this and not make it fun to use?"
EXTERIOR
The profile of the Phantom Drophead Coupé is fundamentally transformed from that of a conventional four-seat convertible by the inclusion of front coach doors. Evocative of the classic sports car profile, they add considerably to the easy entry and exit of rear passengers. Perhaps just as importantly, they also add significantly to the overall strength and stiffness of the body as they allow the construction of an uninterrupted A-pillar. Newly homologated for the Phantom Drophead Coupé, these coach doors are unique to Rolls-Royce.
At the front sits a new, more rakish grille, giving the car a more casual air while retaining its classic looks. Finished in steel, the centre fins are polished while the surround is brushed to match the optional brushed steel bonnet and A-pillar. The grille is hinged at the top in order to give way in the event of a low-speed impact. On top sits the Spirit of Ecstasy, remodelled using advanced computer software. These days she has a more lifelike appearance, with clear definition of her features. Finished in stainless steel, the Spirit of Ecstasy is also available in silver or gold via the Bespoke programme at Goodwood.
The front end of the Phantom Drophead Coupé is more streamlined than that of previous Rolls-Royce cars. Slim front LEDside lights sit above larger round driving lamps. The front bumper is integrated into the design, further softening the look. A discreet camera nestles underneath the numberplate to provide an excellent split-screen view of the road ahead, via the on-board monitor, to help when parking or when pulling out of a side road.
One of the best visual clues to the Phantom Drophead Coupé's character can be found at the rear. The picnic boot is the very essence of automotive affability. The only type of its kind on any convertible, it offers easy access to the luggage compartment as well as providing comfortable outdoor seating for two adults. The substantial hinges are able to accommodate a weight of 150 kg / 330 lb. Inside the boot, 315 litres / 11.1 cu ft of space is enough to house three sets of golf clubs. Importantly, this space remains intact whether the hood is raised or lowered.
An entirely new palette of nine exterior colours has been developed for the Phantom Drophead Coupé: Metropolitan Blue, Admiral Blue, Jubilee Silver, Diamond Black, Duck Egg Blue, Semaphore Yellow, English White, Woodland Green and Ensign Red. These are complimented with hood colours in Silver, Black, Beige, Navy Blue, Deep Red and Deep Green.
Two of the most visually stunning options are the teak decking for the rear hood cover and the brushed steel bonnet and A-pillar. First seen on the 100EX experimental car in 2004, these are signature elements of the Phantom Drophead Coupé look. The brushed finish of the bonnet and A-pillar apes the classic Phantoms of the '20s and '30s but with a delightful 21st century twist.
The rear teak decking epitomises the careful design and attention to detail seen throughout the Phantom Drophead Coupé. It is as functional as it is beautiful. Teak was used because of its inherently hardy properties and its resistance to moisture and decay. Special techniques were developed in the Rolls-Royce wood shop to preserve the appearance of a fresh, unprocessed finish, the aim being to have a final deck that was as close to natural timber as possible. "We wanted it to look as if it had been cut and hand-finished 10 minutes ago," said Alan Sheppard, Chief Interior Designer. More than 30 individual pieces of teak go into each deck, protected by a specially formulated blend of oils. As with all the woods and veneers used by Rolls-Royce, it is sourced from sustainable forests by a team of specialists.
The hood is the largest of any modern convertible. Its acoustic insulation is exemplary, with five layers of insulation material between occupants and the outside world. Lined with a cashmere blend, the structure is more like a bespoke suit than a traditional fabric roof. Rolls-Royce was keen to use a fabric roof rather than a folding hard-top for many reasons, not least aesthetics. As Ian Cameron describes, "There is nothing more romantic than driving a convertible in the rain at night and hearing the drops hit the roof. In conversation with our customers we realised that they felt the same way." A further benefit of the tailored, soft-top roof is the relatively small space required to stow it.
INTERIOR
The interior concept revolves around the idea of an indoor/outdoor space: an all-weather passenger compartment that combines the practicality required for convertible motoring with the sumptuous elegance expected of Rolls-Royce. Rather than take inspiration solely from the automotive world, Chief Interior Designer Alan Shepherd looked elsewhere. "In 2004, when we were designing 100EX, we visited a boatyard in Southampton where one of the famous 1930s America's Cup J-class yachts was being restored. We were struck by the variety and uses of different materials throughout. All of the J-class yachts have a tremendous sense of purposeful elegance about them, and this was something that we were keen to emulate."
The Phantom Drophead Coupé has been designed as a car in which to enjoy the elements. The all-weather surfaces of the interior have been designed to take what nature can throw at them. "We didn't want owners to feel as if they had to pull over at the first spot of rain," says Cameron. To this end, a number of notable features can be seen throughout the interior. Firstly, the seats have no ridges in them, giving a smooth surface so that moisture can be wiped straight off. In place of traditional floor mats, wholly more practical sisal mats are used. Even the carpet itself employs 21st century materials designed to deal with the moisture and humidity encountered in many areas of the world.
The front seats are slimmer than the Phantom's but still offer an uncompromised degree of comfort. Integrated seatbelts are mounted directly onto them, while active head restraints and seat squab airbags give further protection to the torso and head. The driving position is set deliberately high to give a commanding view of the road over the long bonnet, and the curved rear lounge seats offer an intimate, social environment for passengers. Rear legroom is excellent and marks the car out as a true four-seater.
An exceptional sound system has been specially designed for the Phantom Drophead Coupé, taking into account the differing acoustic properties of the convertible. Nine channels of sound arrive via 15 speakers, creating a stereophonic experience to impress the most hardened audiophiles.
ENGINEERING
The challenge in designing any convertible lies in retaining a high degree of torsional rigidity throughout the body while keeping weight down. Torsional rigidity is vital to minimise the scuttle shake associated with most convertible cars and to help maintain the car's dynamic composure.
Extensive testing and research were carried out before the engineering team were completely satisfied. Tens of thousands of kilometres were driven over rough road surfaces to help identify and eliminate potential problems. The result is a spaceframe chassis that makes the Phantom Drophead Coupé perhaps the most rigid convertible available today. The clearest indicator of this incredible strength and stiffness can be seen in the rear-view mirror, which shows no vibration at all, even at high speed.
A great deal of this is due to the modifications around the triangulated A-pillar. The entire windscreen surround was designed to be an integral part of the roll-over protection system. Consequently the A-pillar struts run right down to the floor of the car. Additional aluminium extrusions have been utilised, along with wider sills. The rear haunches have single extrusion beams running at waist height on either side. In all, more than 140 metres / 460 ft of weld go into each Phantom Drophead Coupé body - 20 metres / 65 ft more than in the Phantom. Incorporated into the rear spaceframe structure is the concealed roll-over protection system which deploys from within the rear head restraints in just a fraction of a second in the event of an accident. A ratchet system then locks them in place.
Further adding to occupant safety, frontal impacts are absorbed by crumple zones directed into Y-shaped chassis members and the main understructure - the strongest part of the chassis. Side impact intrusion is minimised by the double-skinned floor construction, strong side sills and integral side impact bars in each door. Additional braces above and below the engine bay and under the rear axle add further rigidity to the spaceframe.
Other safety systems include intelligent braking and restraint systems, combined with integral seatbelts. As a result, the Phantom Drophead Coupé is perhaps the safest convertible car on the market.
The spaceframe is constructed at the BMW centre for aluminium competence in Dingolfing, Germany. Manufactured to within a tolerance of just 0.1 mm / 0.004 in, each spaceframe is welded entirely by hand. They are then checked by a computer-guided machine to ensure absolute accuracy.
One of the more interesting problems encountered by the engineering team was the proximity of the optional brushed steel bonnet to the aluminium front wings. These materials are not normally used alongside each other due to the adverse corrosion effects of aluminium on steel. An integral part of the testing process was a 20-year-old DeLorean car. Manufactured with stainless steel exterior panels, it provided an interesting case study into the long-term durability of the material.
All of the panels used on the Phantom Drophead Coupé are unique to this car, representing some of the 1300 new parts used. Unlike on the Phantom, the front wings have been constructed from aluminium using the 'superform' technique, in which aluminium is heated to the critical temperature before being literally sucked down over a mould to form the large, complex shape.
DRIVING
The Phantom Drophead Coupé's advanced aluminium spaceframe is at the heart of its refined, dynamic driving experience. Lightweight and exceptionally strong, it impacts positively on ride, comfort and safety. Its inherent rigidity is essential in isolating vibration and maintaining the hushed interior calm associated with the brand. The new car is shorter than the Phantom by 250 mm / 9.8 in, so turn-in is slightly quicker, making for a wholly more agile driving experience.
A lower centre of gravity, combined with the reduced wheelbase and incredibly stiff body, produces a ride that is on the refined, comfortable side of sporty. Feedback from the wheels is informative but not intrusive. Imperfect road surfaces go unnoticed while feel through the steering wheel inspires confidence. New spring dampers and lighter anti-roll bars have been engineered to maintain comfort without loss of agility. Self-levelling air struts continuously adjust for increased loading in harder cornering, giving drivers the ability to place the car through turns with absolute precision.
The front double-wishbone suspension features a hydraulic mount to minimise vibration through the steering wheel. Multi-link rear suspension is designed for increased ride comfort with anti-lift and anti-dive technology.
With no fixed roof, much of the Phantom Drophead Coupé's weight naturally sits lower and further forward than in the Phantom, due to the structural roll-over protection built into the A-pillar. Nonetheless, a 50:50 weight distribution has been maintained.
Other heavy components - the engine, gearbox and propshaft, for example - sit as low as possible, again contributing to the low centre of gravity.
Grip is provided by standard-fit Michelin PAX run-flat tyres, metrically sized at 540 mm (approximately 20 inches in diameter). These tyres enable the Phantom Drophead Coupé to run for at least 100 miles / 160 km at speeds up to 50 mph / 80 km/h before being replaced. A remarkable level of control still exists, even with a tyre fully deflated. Optional 21-inch wheels with Goodyear run-flat EMT tyres are also available, sitting on nine-spoke rims. The inclusion of run-flat tyre technology removes the need for spare wheels and a jack, freeing up space in the luggage compartment.
Since the weight of the wheels has a direct impact on ride comfort and driving dynamics, Rolls-Royce has developed a lightweight ceramic core to the wheels to reduce unsprung weight.
Ample power is supplied by a 6.75-litre, naturally aspirated, V12 engine. Developing 453 bhp / 338 kW and 720 Nm / 531 lb ft of torque at 3500 rpm, delivery is smooth and abundant. Furthermore, with 75 per cent of engine power available at just 1000 rpm, progress from a standstill is easy and remains so throughout the rev range. The highly efficient unit uses direct injection and variable valve timing. The engine is mated to a six-speed ZF automatic shift-by-wire gearbox.
The powerful V12 will accelerate the Phantom Drophead Coupé to 60 mph in under six seconds and on to a limited top speed of 149 mph / 240 km/h. It stops in equally impressive fashion, using 374 mm / 14.7 in ventilated disc brakes at the front and 370 mm / 14.5 in at the rear. Twin piston alloy callipers at the front and single piston callipers at the rear bring the large-diameter wheels to rest. The braking system incorporates the latest four-channel anti-lock system. Emergency Brake Assist steps in under heavy braking, immediately applying full force in an emergency. At rest, an electromechanical park brake can be applied via a button on the dashboard.
For maximum active safety, the sophisticated braking system is supplemented by an advanced dynamic stability control system that gives outstanding car control in an emergency situation.
Final testing was carried out in several locations around the world. The hot-weather tests took place in the stifling heat of Death Valley, USA and the Namibian desert, while cold-weather testing was undertaken in the harsh winter conditions of Scandinavia.
CRAFTSMANSHIP
Craftsmanship is a hallmark of Rolls-Royce. From the traditional wood and leather workshop skills to the complex welding of the aluminium spaceframe, a 21st century Rolls-Royce is a blend of hand crafted expertise and high-tech materials and techniques.
With more than 350 man-hours invested in each car, not including the time taken to build the engine, nearly right is never acceptable. The maxim of company founder Sir Henry Royce still resonates around Goodwood today: "Strive for perfection in everything you do." From day-to-day production cars to the often complex Bespoke requests, Rolls-Royce has a skilled team adept at meeting the challenges of crafting the finest cars for the most discerning customers.
For example, a number of the individual leather pieces used in the Phantom Drophead Coupé are larger than those in the Phantom, which makes their selection and usage more difficult because of naturally occurring blemishes and imperfections. The skill comes in using each hide in such a way that these natural marks are hidden or discarded, minimising waste and resulting in a perfect finish.
Other new materials, such as the teak and brushed steel, bring with them their own unique challenges. Wood is a defining feature of the Phantom Drophead Coupé, and the woodshop team can spend up to a month preparing, matching, shaping and finishing each car's set. The teak deck is finished with a specially formulated oil blend to ensure a rich, natural, longer-lasting lustre. Its use on the Phantom Drophead Coupé is unlike any other in the automotive industry. With the brushed steel, the difficulty lies in getting exactly the same look to each of the parts - the grille, the bonnet and the A-pillar. After a great deal of research and testing, machine-brushing finished by hand-polishing was deemed the best way of achieving a uniform grain.
Craftsmanship can be found throughout the Phantom Drophead Coupé, from the largest, most visible parts down to the smallest, unseen detail. By constructing each car with the same enthusiasm and passion with which it was designed, Rolls-Royce ensures that each one will offer a unique motoring experience, both to its owners and to all those who will travel in it.

Luggage is housed within a picnic boot, a split tail compartment that opens in two parts giving easy access to the 315 litres of space. The lower tailgate provides a comfortable seating platform for two adults when lowered. Careful engineering of the folding soft-top roof means that it stows in a relatively small space resulting in a luggage compartment that remains unaffected regardless of whether the roof is up or down.
The fabric hood is the largest of any modern convertible car and its acoustic insulation is exemplary. Five layers of material ensure that the cabin remains a serene space, even at speed. Lined with cashmere it has been tailored to stow in a relatively small space.
At the core of the Phantom Drophead Coupé is an advanced aluminium chassis, perhaps the single most significant component in delivering the marques legendary refinement. Lightweight and exceptionally strong, it impacts positively on ride comfort, handling and safety. Hand made, it requires over 140 meters of welding in each chassis. Power is supplied by the same 6.75 litre naturally aspirated V12 engine found in the Phantom saloon, giving brisk performance and a 0-60mph time of 5.7 seconds.
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Chairman and Chief Executive, Ian Robertson, said, "The Phantom Drophead Coupé marks the next chapter in our history. While the saloon continues as the brand flagship, the Drophead leads us in a more informal direction, attracting new buyers to the marque. In the coming years other new models will strengthen the company still further."
The Phantom Drophead Coupé has been carefully crafted to be aesthetically pleasing, yet practical too. Wood, leather, chrome and brushed steel have been used where most appropriate. Form and function have equal billing. The simplicity of the design belies a car built to provide years of effortless service. It will offer owners an unparalleled convertible experience, combining compelling driveability with exceptional engineering, technology and design - hand crafted from the finest materials to an exceptional level of quality.

2008 Dodge Magnum Lineup Packs Powerful Punch
* New 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 includes race-inspired, aggressive hood, functional performance hood scoop, new grille, headlamps, front fascia design and interior appointments
* Restyled 2008 Dodge Magnum R/T continues to defy comparison in the marketplace with functionality, HEMI® power and fuel-saving Multi-displacement System (MDS)
* Sophisticated exterior and interior enhancements combined with bold Dodge attitude create a modern Magnum lineup for 2008
Detroit, Jan 9, 2007 - The newly restyled 2008 Dodge Magnum lineup -- including SRT8, R/T, SXT and SE models -- continues the boldly-styled theme of American muscle, with its unique profile, exceptional versatility, HEMI® power, fuel-saving cylinder deactivation and rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive performance.
Advanced technologies, flexible and functional cargo space and integrated safety and security features combine to provide a powerful, capable family vehicle with the ride and handling of a sports car.
A package unlike any other in the marketplace, the 2008 Dodge Magnum lineup is an evolution of the bold, powerful and street-smart philosophy of the Dodge brand.
2008 DODGE MAGNUM SRT8
The 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 is more menacing than ever with a completely redesigned hood, grille, front fascia and functional performance hood scoop. The 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 remains true to the SRT credo of "Race inspired, street legal" with 0-60 mph performance in the low 5-second range while, at the same time, maintaining all of the utility and convenience features the entire 2008 Dodge Magnum lineup has to offer.
"The 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 is the ultimate package for drivers seeking complete, sports-car performance without compromising family-vehicle convenience and functionality," said Mike Accavitti, Director - Dodge Motorsports and SRT Marketing and Product Planning, Chrysler Group.
Aggressive Performance-inspired Exterior and Race-inspired Interior
A redesigned hood, front fascia and new grille highlight the extensive changes on the new 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8. A functional performance hood scoop has also been added.
The black honeycomb insert of the crosshair grille and air inlet of the front fascia increases brake cooling. The front fascia itself provides an aerodynamic benefit by reducing lift. The 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 rides on 20-inch aluminum, SRT-designed wheels wearing 245/45/ZR20 (front) and 255/45/ZR20 (back) F1 Goodyear tires.
Available exterior colors for the 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 are Bright Silver Metallic, Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat, Steel Blue Metallic Clear Coat and TorRed.
On the inside, the new 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 maintains its race-inspired environment. Enhancements for 2008 include agate-color accent stitching, carbon-fiber leather-trim door handles, and LED lighting in the cup holders and door-map pockets.
The 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 continues to feature power-adjustable, deeply sculpted and highly bolstered sport seats with performance suede inserts in the front, an improved grip-enhancing carbon-fiber leather-trim steering wheel, and full-performance instrumentation, including a 180-mph (300-kph) speedometer, a tachometer and a temperature gauge.
"That Thing Gotta HEMI?"
Under the newly designed hood of the 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 is the 6.1-liter HEMI V-8, delivering 425 horsepower (317 kW) and 420 lb.-ft. (569 Nom) of torque, contributing to a performance roster that includes a 0-60 mph time in the low 5-second range and 0-100-0 mph in under 17 seconds.
New for 2008, drivers can receive instant feedback on their personal performance numbers from a newly available ReConfigurable Display (RCD) in the cluster. Power for the SRT 6.1-liter HEMI is channeled through a five-speed automatic transmission with specially calibrated, driver-selectable Auto Stick, which offers fully automatic or manual shifting selection.
All-around SRT Driving Performance
The new 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 provides all-around driving performance with SRT-tuned dampers, tailored spring rates and suspension bushings and large-diameter anti-sway bars. For added stability and aerodynamic benefit, the ride height of the Magnum SRT8 is one-half inch lower than the Dodge Magnum R/T, SXT and SE models, while the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) has been specially tuned for the 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8's performance-handling characteristics.
Benchmark braking is a hallmark of SRT performance and design. The 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 features tried and true Brembo performance calipers, finished in red. Each is equipped with four pistons, gripping 360 mm x 32 mm vented rotors up front, with 350 mm x 26 mm vented rotors in the rear. The results: 60-0 mph stopping distance of approximately 110 feet.
Street and Racing Technology
SRT creates some of the Chrysler Group's boldest, most distinctive products by single-mindedly following its core vision: Deliver benchmark performance at the lowest price, and deliver it with absolute integrity and credibility.
Every SRT vehicle showcases five key aspects: Exterior styling that resonates with the brand image; race-inspired interiors; world-class ride and handling characteristics across a dynamic range; benchmark braking; and standout powertrain.
2008 DODGE MAGNUM R/T, SXT AND SE
The 2008 Dodge Magnum R/T, SXT and SE charge into the future with a sophistication and refinement noticeable throughout its new bold front exterior design and a brighter, more upscale look and feel to the interior.
"The 2008 Dodge Magnum offers interior and exterior refinements in a boldly-styled package that delivers comfort, functionality and performance," said Tom Loveless, Director - DodgeMarketing and Global Communications. "Dodge Magnum is a one-of-a-kind family transportation vehicle that continues to defy comparison in the marketplace."
Refined Exterior Enhancements
Design changes to the 2008 Dodge Magnum R/T, SXT and SE can be seen in the signature Dodge crosshair front grille which has been lowered and stretched horizontally to create a more aggressive look. Chrome elements added to the front fascia and grille and extra detailing around the fog lamps provide additional interest and refinement to the face of the new Magnum.
The Magnum R/T features optional Xenon high intensity discharge (HID) elements in the headlamps for greater visibility while adding a sophisticated, high-tech look to the exterior.
The hood of 2008 Dodge Magnum models features expressive accent lines that run from the leading edge toward the windshield, highlighting its muscular character and hinting at the power beneath. Optional chrome-clad aluminum wheels and 245/45R20 all-season performance tires contribute to the bold, powerful image that is pure Dodge.
New exterior paint colors include Light Pebble Beige and Titanium.
More Upscale, Bright Interior
The 2008 Dodge Magnum continues to offer a no-nonsense functional interior with well-appointed upgrades including soft-touch surfaces on the arm rests and the top of the center console, a new cruise control stalk and optional LED lighting, which illuminates the cup holders and door-map pockets. Brighter, chromed highlights have been added to the interior cabin of the R/T and SXT models.
The instrument panel has been redesigned to offer a more driver-oriented layout. The clean lines and easy-to-read gauges are highlighted with chrome bezels to deliver additional interest.
Most Powerful Engine Options in its Class
The 2008 Dodge Magnum R/T is equipped with a modern 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine featuring MDS. MDS seamlessly alternates between four-cylinder mode when less power is needed and V-8 mode when more power is demanded, increasing fuel economy as much as 20 percent without sacrificing vehicle performance. Drivers may be informed when four-cylinder mode is active by selecting the new fuel-economy display available through the optional Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC).

Alles over Detroit Auto Show: Rethinking the Box: Nissan Bevel Concept Car! | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Jalopnik | 2007-01-09 05:58:02
Oh Hell double-yeah! We were slightly worried that the computer enhanced shots of the Bevel we threw up yesterday were exactly that. But no, Ghosn and the gang did good and showed up with a concept car we'd like to see in production. Forget the soft-touch, over-rendered, Erector-set interior (Erector means "dildo" in German) and instead concentrate on the massive asymmetry of the exterior! One door on one side, two doors on the other, the license plate hole is off to the right and even the Nissan logo up front is unbalanced. We love it!. Build it, build it, build it, build it, build it! One caveat; five-spoke wheels are better than six. And asymetrical. Full press release for those who jump. – Jonny Lieberman

DetroitAuto Show: Improving the Cube: Nissan Bevel Concept [Internal]Nissan Rogue, Bevel Concept Debut at 2007 NAIAS [Jan. 7, 07]
DETROIT (Jan. 7, 2007) - Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) today unveiled two new vehicles at a press conference at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit - Nissan's first entry into the small crossover SUV market, the 2008 Rogue, and an advanced design study, the Nissan Bevel Concept.
"We're proud to present two vehicles that exemplify Nissan's synergies between design and production, between being current and staying current," said Brad Bradshaw, senior vice president, sales and marketing, NNA. "Our production model Rogue and our advanced Bevel Concept are built for the same active, enthused drivers, just at different stages of their lives."
The all-new Nissan Rogue, with its balance of sleek functionality, aggressive styling and sporty performance, appeals to an untapped segment of the crossover SUV market, providing a vehicle that fulfills the functional needs of young, active drivers while still indulging in the emotional aspects of style and performance that allow these drivers to fully enjoy the driving experience.
The dramatic Bevel Concept was conceived at NissanDesign America, Inc. (NDA) in La Jolla, Calif. for the same driver, but at a different stage of life. With its driver-centric interior that is more a workshop-on-wheels than a traditional SUV, the Bevel was created for "empty-nesters" who spend their new-found free time on hobbies, recreation and community service.
Brief overviews of the 2008 Nissan Rogue and Bevel concept follow.
2008 Nissan Rogue
The 2008 Nissan Rogue is built on Nissan's "C" platform and mates Nissan's QR25DE 2.5-liter DOHC 16-valve inline 4-cylinder (rated at 170 horsepower and 175 lb-ft torque) to a standard Xtronic CVT? (Continuously Variable Transmission) with available paddle shifters for sporty, efficient performance. An all-new all-wheel drive system with yaw rate control is also available.
Every Rogue comes standard with Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) with Traction Control System (TCS), a responsive Electric Power-assisted Steering (EPS) system and 4-wheel disc brakes that feature an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA).
Inside, Rogue offers a balance of sleek surface continuity and ultra-functionality, offering available leather-appointed seating, front heated seats and mirrors and steering wheel-mounted Bluetooth? Nissan Bevel Concept
The Nissan Bevel Concept is a dynamic, multi-purpose vehicle that, unlike currently available sport utility vehicles or minivans that emphasize passenger needs and comfort, places its focus strictly on the primary user - male empty-nesters actively engaged in hobbies, recreation and community service. Bevel offers unique, function-inspired asymmetrical styling, a high-utility three-zone interior and technology ranging from glass roof-mounted solar panels to drive-by-wire steering, throttle and braking.
Bevel's exterior design begins with the two passenger-side doors, featuring a rear door hinged at the rear to provide an exceptionally wide door opening of nearly five-and-a-half feet. Bevel's tall one-piece rear hatch features a special horizontal hinge arrangement, with a height when raised of 6'2" from the ground. With the hatch open, a special tailgate-like work platform folds down and snaps into place, creating a sturdy workbench-like area.
Bevel features a pair of power outlets - a traditional 12V outlet and a 110V power tool recharging outlet, which is powered by Bevel's integrated solar cells mounted beneath the large glass roof panels. Bevel also utilizes a unique roof cargo system designed to carry loads up to 250 pound and featuring six hexagon-shaped "pucks" with pop-up hooks.
Bevel's interior combines comfort, utility and technology. The driver's area includes a comfortable, rich leather-appointed fixed seat and Bevel's unique "ribbon" instrument panel, which moves four inches forward and back when the driver's door is opened or closed.
The "command central" information/technology zone features a series of screens that display images from the sideview mirror cameras and five information menus - Vehicle Information, HVAC, Navigation, Entertainment and Home - through use of the ribbon-mounted controller.
The "Entertainment" control center allows the driver to access phone settings, weather and traffic reports, Internet and personal e-mail accounts, and music, while also allowing the driver to access a home network and monitor locks and security system, heat and air conditioning, appliance, room lighting and garage door status.
Bevel's utility/pet zone provides maximum cargo space through the use of fold-flat front passenger and rear bench seating that crates a smooth, continuous cargo floor/work area. The flooring itself is constructed from laminated recycled walnut, creating an extremely hard, workbench-like surface.
Bevel provides unique accommodations for pets, including a 360-degree pet leash swivel connection point and a large, removable "doggie hutch" pet carrier designed to fit securely in the rear cargo area.
Conceptually, Bevel would feature a small, efficient 2.5-liter V6 with HEV, combining driving pleasure with environmentally friendly design.

Alles over Detroit Auto Show Preview: Nissan Rolls Out A Roguish Mini-Murano For 2008 | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Jalopnik | 2006-12-29 07:57:33
During the hell that was automakers' holiday parties (we can't quite shake the recurring nightmare of being eaten like a loin-burger by a 50-foot-tall Bob Lutz) -- one brief respite was Nissan's embargoed event/holiday "blowout" to show off its new ute, the Rogue (nee Qashqai in Europe). Unlike the more pedestrian Big Three parties, Nissan threw down with a laser light show featuring pixelated pics of the Rogue with The Beatles' greatest hits playing in the background. While Nissan's newest is no sous-marin jaune, the Japanese side of Ghosn's cross-continental alliance sure had a unique way to show it off. Which is good, because what can you say about a Murano mini-me with two trim levels and a 2.5-liter four-banger with CVT. Frankly, given the catchy name and the pre-release marketing we were hoping for something more like a Rogue-R Spec-V. Gallery below and the full press release after the jump. – Ray Wert

Alles over LA Auto Show Preview: 2008 Nissan Altima Coupe | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Jalopnik | 2006-11-30 07:32:49
Our mate at Carscoop calls it a poor man's Infiniti G35, and despite the front-wheel-drive that's probably as accurate a comparison as can be made. Rather than a sawed-off Altima sedan, the new Altima Coupe -- coming in mid-2007 as a 2008 model -- has its own dimensions. Its wheelbase is four inches shorter than the sedan's, suspension geometry has been altered, and the engine's placed lower in the subframe. According to the press release, Nissan's virtually eliminated torque steer by employing equal-length half-shafts with equal angles, which closer to parallel with the ground. (Mech engineers, feel free to chime in here.) And that's important, because under the hood will be next generation of Nissan's torquey 3.5 liter V6, producing 270 hp -- though the 175 hp, 2.5-liter four will likely be standard. More details after the jump. – Mike Spinelli
Press Release:
New Altima Coupe Debuts at Los Angeles Auto Show; Offers Upscale Styling, Sporty Performance, Driver-Oriented Interior and High Quality
The Nissan Altima is a car on the move. With its next generation design for the 2007 model year, Nissan's best-selling vehicle in the United States is poised for even greater success as it establishes segment leadership in style, design, performance and innovation. The next-generation Altima is also expanding its model offerings with a new Altima Hybrid, set to go on sale in select markets in January 2007, and a dramatically styled new Altima Coupe, which will go on sale as a 2008 model in summer 2007.
The Altima Coupe, which made its debut in the shadows of Hollywood at the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show, fills a desire among target customers for a more personal expression of style, individuality and fashionable appearance. The Altima Coupe's unique exterior design is intended to stand out in a crowd of sedan-based two-door models with magnetic, perfectly proportioned styling with a shorter wheelbase, shorter overall length and lower height than the Altima Sedan.
The smaller size and lighter overall weight also contribute to the Coupe's sportier driving feel - other desired attributes of the typically younger, more performance-oriented coupe buyers.
"Rather than just eliminating two doors from the Altima Sedan, we gave the Altima Coupe its own style, its own dimensions and its own interpretation of Nissan's exhilarating driving pleasure," said Bill Bosley, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division.
Though the new Altima Coupe shares much with the latest edition of the Altima Sedan, which went on sale in early November 2006, the Coupe's smaller dimensions, driver-oriented cockpit and unique styling give it an extensive amount of separation from the Altima Sedan.
Dimensionally, the Altima Coupe rides on a 105.3-inch wheelbase, a full 4.0 inches shorter than the Sedan. Overall length is 182.5 inches - 7.1 inches less than the Sedan. The Coupe also has a lower profile - at 55.3 inches it is 2.5 inches shorter than the Sedan. In terms of major body panels, the two cars share only a common hood, with all other panels, grille, headlights and rear combination lights unique to the Altima Coupe.
Under the new Altima Coupe's sophisticated exterior design, this latest addition to the Altima family shares the platform, powertrain and user-friendly features and innovations of the new fourth-generation Altima.
"A strong sedan starting point, such as the new Altima, also gives you a tremendous advantage - if you get the basics right, you can focus your efforts on the unique desires of coupe buyers, including wanting a purely personal space," said Bosley.
The Altima Coupe, as part of the fourth-generation Altima design, utilizes Nissan's all-new, highly acclaimed "D" platform with increased body rigidity and a redesigned suspension. This new platform was developed with the objective of making Altima one of the best performing large front-wheel drive vehicles available globally.
New suspension geometry, shock absorbers with rebound springs, engine placement that is lower in the subframe and equal-length half-shafts that have equal angles and are more parallel to the ground all help to virtually eliminate torque steer.
The rear multi-link independent suspension design separates the rear shocks and springs for reduced friction and the shocks are in line with the center of the rear wheels, providing better damping and less harshness. Front and rear stabilizer bars are standard. The Altima suspension has been specially tuned for use with the Altima Coupe.
The new Altima Coupe is offered with a choice of two engines and two transmissions. The 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 is the "next generation" version of the 12-time Ward's "10 Best Engines" award-winning VQ-series V6. For use in the Altima Coupe, it is rated at 270 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque and offers strong acceleration and refined sound quality. The V6 features reduced friction, improved cylinder head cooling and new twin knock sensors.
Also available with the new Altima Coupe is a 2.5-liter DOHC 16-valve QR25 inline 4-cylinder, producing 175 horsepower (170 hp CAL) and 180 lb-ft of torque (175 lb-ft CAL). This engine has been refined from the previous version, with a larger, equal-length intake manifold, increased compression ratio and reduced friction characteristics. It features a silent chain drive and a balancer system (with balancer changed to a center-mounted location for better NVH) that effectively negates vibrations without taking up much space - combining ideal packaging and smoothness.
Both engines feature continuously variable valve timing, modular engine design, microfinished crank journals and cam lobes, molybdenum coated lightweight pistons and electronically controlled throttles.
Both the 3.5-liter V6 and 2.5-liter 4-cylinder models are available with Nissan's advanced Xtronic CVT(TM) (Continuously Variable Transmission) or 6-speed manual transmissions.
The V6 CVT features a "Sport" modecontroller with a high-speed central processing unit and Adaptive Shift Controller with adaptive logic for faster shifting in both normal and manual modes. The adaptive logic feature delivers the best shift pattern based on the driving environment and driver's perceived intentions.
"The driving performance of the Altima Coupe is biased toward sporty feel, especially when equipped with our award-winning V6," said Bosley. "Handling is also a strong point of the new Coupe, as is the responsiveness feeling provided by the Xtronic CVT transmission."
Also contributing to the Altima Coupe's sporty performance feel are a standard twin-orifice vehicle-speed-sensitive power rack-and-pinion steering system and 4-wheel disc brakes with standard 4-wheel, 4-channel, 4-sensor Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD).
Altima Coupe models with the 4-cylinder engine are equipped with 16-inch wheels and tires, while V6-equipped Altima Coupes come with unique-design 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and 215/55R17 tires.
The Altima Coupe's performance feeling is also enhanced by a driver-centered interior. Though sharing much of the design and features with the new Altima Sedan, the Coupe includes unique sport-style front seats with more side support, in-board release lever and front kangaroo pouches. All Altima Coupes also utilize a parking brake hand lever (versus foot release for Altima Sedans with CVT). The Coupe also includes a 60/40 split and flat fold-down rear seat.
Like the Altima Sedan, the Altima Coupe's instrument panel features a Fine Vision gauge display for enhanced readability and the L-shaped flow of the instrument panel to the center console adds to the driver-oriented cockpit feel.
The center console includes a double front cup holder, among the many convenient cup and bottle areas and storage compartments.
The list of impressive passenger amenities includes standard Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition and available Bose®-developed audio system with nine speakers, Bluetooth® Hands-Free Phone System, satellite radio and dual-zone automatic temperature control.
The new Altima Coupe also comes equipped with a number of standard safety features, including Zone Body construction with front and rear crumple zones and Advanced Air Bag System (AABS), which includes dual-stage front supplemental air bags. Also standard are front seatside-impact supplemental air bags for chest protection and roof-mounted curtain side-impact air bags for front and rear outboard occupant head protection.
Other standard equipment includes front seat Active Head Restraints, the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) child seat anchors and tether system and Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS).
The 2008 Altima Coupe will be available in four well-equipped models: 2.5 S 6MT, 2.5 S CVT, 3.5 SE 6MT, 3.5 SE CVT.
Available technology features include a RearView Monitor, which utilizes a small camera to help show the view behind the vehicle when in reverse gear, and Nissan Navigation System with a 6.5-inch color monitor.
"Along with the Altima Coupe's extensive list of available features and amenities, it offers one more thing to discerning coupe buyers - the reassurance of Nissan durability, quality and reliability," said Bosley.
The new Altima Coupe will be assembled at the Nissan North America Manufacturing Smyrna and Decherd, Tennessee plants.
Altima Coupe becomes the seventh Nissan Altima model, joining the 2.5, 2.5 S, 2.5 S with SL Package, 3.5 SE, 3.5 SL and Altima Hybrid (Hybrid Electric Vehicle).
"The Altima name and outstanding reputation adds great credibility to the new Altima Coupe - and the Coupe makes the Altima brand stronger by appealing to a new segment of buyers," said Bosley. "And like the Altima Sedan, the new Coupe will be a tremendous value when it goes on sale next summer. If you're looking for style, performance and affordability, the new Altima Coupe delivers."
