Download Firefox 3, set a world record

Alles over Download Firefox 3, set a world record | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Neowin.net | 2008-05-30 02:21:24
Set a Guinness World Record, enjoy a better web. It's the goal of the Spread Firefox group when Firefox 3 goes final this summer."Sounds like a good deal, right? All you have to do is get Firefox 3 during Download Day to help set the record for most software downloads in 24 hours - it’s that easy. We're not asking you to swallow a sword or to balance 30 spoons on your face, although that would be kind of awesome," the site says. This will take approximately a week after the attempt date to know if the record was broken. Judges from Spread Firefox and Guinness World Records will need to review download logs and validate the record attempt. This is the first record attempt of its kind so there is no set number to beat, although the group looks to the number of Firefox 2 downloads on its launch day, which was 1.6 million. 5 million seems to be their target for Firefox 3.One of the biggest hurdles faced is the fact that a "download" is the transmission of the entire, fully functioning Firefox 3 -- not just an update. The official release date for Firefox 3 has not been announced yet, however, Spread Firefox claims to be posting on their site "soon." Firefox ponders marketing overhaul

Alles over Firefox ponders marketing overhaul | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Neowin.net | 2007-08-14 01:45:01
The Mozilla Corporation is preparing a number of changes to the marketing of the open source Firefox browser in a bid to further grow market share. "To date, Mozilla has done a reasonably good job getting people to download Firefox, but our data shows that a very high percentage of those people do not become long term, active Firefox users. We need to figure out how we overcome the default behaviour of 'clicking on the blue e'," JT Batson from Mozilla's marketing team wrote in a blog posting earlier this year.Approximately half of those who download Firefox never actually install the application. Another 50 per cent of those who do install the software are counted as active users, according to data posted on a Firefox wiki. The group plans an abundance of changes. The Firefox icon, for instance, could be accompanied by a text that more clearly indicates its purpose, and the developers will attempt to place it more prominently on the user's desktop, the Windows quick launch bar or the dock in OS X. bheer writes "The Guardian points out a page on the Mozilla wiki noting that 'only 50% of the people downloading Firefox actually try it out, and only a further half of those continue to use it actively.' ZDNet has some commentary on the browser's retention rate. While a 25% retention rate isn't necessarily bad, Mozilla is trying to improve these figures with a 12 point plan that includes more TV and media advertising, a better start page and several installation tweaks."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Alles over SpeedModo: ~1Mbit EVDO Downloads with Sony's Sexxed Up Vaio TX Subnotebook | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Gizmodo | 2006-12-13 01:00:35
We've had our mitts on Sony's TX -- the first Cellular equipped laptop capable of DSL speeds -- for a bit now. But this morning, Sprint upgraded their EVDO network to the faster, DSL speed Revision A standard. And this gorgeous little subnotebook sucked down cellular bits like I've never seen a WWAN chipset do. On average, it hit 500kbits DL, but at its best, it downloaded Firefox to the tune of 157 KBytes a second, or over 1Mbit/s. Granted, I am on Twin Peaks, less than 1000 feet from the physical peak of San Francisco. But these speeds are unheard of for a built in data connection. I've put data test images from speedtest.net and broadbandreports.com after the jump, if you're interested. And the hardware itself isn't bad either. The TX's carbon fiber chassis, 11-inch ultrabrite screen, dual layer dvd burner, finger print scanner, and smart keyboard had me at "HELLO." (Oh yes, I am so giddy about this notebook that just dropped Jerry F-ing Maguire quotes on you.) A gut check on speed and battery life: Batteries go on and on, with the TX's ability to shut down individual components, user spec'd. And Core Solo is about as good as it gets for lappie this small. The details: click on through for a visual tour of the bits and ports of the notebook.

Alles over Mozilla: Firefox reaches 2 million downloads in 24 hours | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Neowin.net | 2006-10-29 13:00:21
Mozilla recently posted that just 24 hours after releasing Firefox 2.0 (reported by Neowin here) to the public on 24th October, 2 million people downloaded it - that is 30 downloads a second. To compare this figure with Microsoft's IE7 release of only half a million downloads in the first 24 hours, it becomes clear there is a active community that follows Mozilla and anticipates new versions.Looking back on previous Firefox milestone releases:Firefox 1.0: 1 million downloads in the first 24 hours.Firefox 1.5: 1.5 million downloads in the first 24 hoursFirefox 2: 2 million (actually slightly more) people using Firefox 2 in the first 24 hours."Maybe we should jump straight to Firefox 10 and see if we get 10 million users in the first 24 hours." Nine Reasons To Skip Firefox 2.0

Alles over Nine Reasons To Skip Firefox 2.0 | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Slashdot | 2006-10-29 08:30:21
grandgator writes, "Hyped by a good deal of fanfare, outfitted with some new features, and now available for download, Firefox 2.0 has already passed 2 million downloads in less than 24 hours. However, a growing number of users are reporting bugs, widening memory leaks, unexpected instability, poor compatibility, and an overall experience that is inferior to that offered by prior versions of the browser. Expanding on these ideas, this list compiles nine reasons why it might be a good idea to stick with 1.5 until the debut of 3.0, skipping the "poorly badged" 2.0 release completely." OK, maybe it's 10 reasons. An anonymous reader writes, "SecurityFocus reports an unpatched highly critical vulnerability in Firefox 2.0. This defect has been known since June 2006 but no patch has yet been made available. The developers claimed to have fixed the problem in 1.5.0.5 according to Secunia, but the problem still exists in 2.0 according to SecurityFocus (and I have witnessed the crash personally). If security is the main reason users should switch to Firefox, how do we explain known vulnerabilities remaining unpatched across major releases?"

Yesterday all hell broke loose when we discovered and publicised the uploading of Firefox 2.0 to Mozilla's public FTP and subsequent mirrors. Today we've stumbled accross many blog entries, articles and bitterness over the whole web's decision to "leak" this information to Mozilla's fans.Guys - let's be straight here: anyone who wants the new build will get it somehow. Be that on the day of release or prior to the official announcement. You cannot expect every news site on the internet looking for a scoop to sit back and make a decision based on morals and postpone the news. It ain't gonna happen. You can either have your cake and we'll eat it, or you put your cake in the fridge and do your utmost to make sure no one lights the candles until release day.You know why it happened don't you? It's because these people who linked to, broke stories and more importantly downloaded the new build LOVE the product. They're not doing it to intentionally harm your FTP servers, they don't want to put mirrors out of action - they just want their greedy little hands on your nugget of software gold.I'm not having a go, I'm just stating an opinion and attempting to justify why we'd do such a thing.Oh, and if it helps I didn't download the build. Real, Google, & Mozilla Sign Distribution Deals

Alles over Real, Google, & Mozilla Sign Distribution Deals | rss feed | toevoegen | e-mail nieuwsalarm | Neowin.net | 2006-08-03 08:34:58
On Wednesday, RealNetworks, Inc. announced that it had agreed to distribute Mozilla Corp.'s Firefox Web browser, and that it has extended its distribution deal with Google, Inc.Under the multiyear deals, Seattle-based RealNetworks would continue to offer the Google Toolbar with its RealPlayer, and would also offer people downloading the media player the option of downloading Firefox. Financial terms were not disclosed.RealNetwork says it distributes more than 2 million pieces of software a day worldwide. In its prior two-year agreement with Google, RealNetworks distributed "millions" of Google toolbars globally. The deal could help Mozilla in its effort to grab market share from Microsoft's Internet Explorer, which dominates the browser market. Mozilla this week said it had passed the 200 millionth download of Firefox, which has grabbed 15 percent of the global usage share since its release 21 months ago. Much of that progress has come at the expense of IE, which has just under 80 percent of global usage.Google, on the other hand, dominates the toolbar market with Yahoo Inc. Together, the companies accounted for more than 95 percent of the searches originating from toolbars in May, according to ComScore Networks. Google had 49.1 percent, and Yahoo, 46.2 percent.
